The challenge
VR interfaces borrowed too heavily from 2D flat paradigms — overlaid menus broke immersion and made new users feel lost in 3D space without clear spatial context.
Role & responsibilities
What I owned
Defined the full spatial interaction language. Designed world-embedded UI elements, controller interaction patterns, and the onboarding flow for new VR users.
Research & insights
What I found
Tested 3 existing VR games with 6 users
Every user instinctively reached for physical space around them before resorting to controller menus — confirming that diegetic UI (embedded in the world) was the right direction
Outcome & impact
The solution
Designed a fully diegetic UI system: interaction indicators embedded in the physical game world, spatial audio cues for feedback, and controller gestures that matched natural human motion — eliminating flat menu overlays entirely.
Fully diegetic UI system
Intuitive spatial interactions
Enhanced immersion & accessibility
